Newborn Workshop and One On One Photo Classes

I've had several photographers come to me asking how I pose and work with my newborns. Many have asked if I would do a workshop/class on newborn photography.

So, I'm in the process of arranging a newborn workshop. It will be a GREAT deal for the mother since she won't have a session fee or feel obligated to buy any of the images! It's a way for me to say THANKS for allowing me to use the newborn as a model for the class.

The class is limited to 3-4 people. I want to keep it small so everyone has a good chance to learn a lot and get some hands on posing. The class will last anywhere from 3-4 hours, maybe a little longer if necessary.

If you or someone you know is interested, please let me know. I have 1, possibly 2 more openings and the class is scheduled for the Saturday, the 20th of March. The cost for this workshop for the students is just $50!

I'm also doing offering on one photography classes on Fridays. Cost is just $25 and the sessions last an 1 - 1 1/2 hours.

  1. I did my first newborn shoot in January, up until then I'd always worked with Toddlers and older children. I had great difficulty in getting the baby to pose, even though I did a lot of research, bought a boppy pillow and made him as comfortable as possible, he still wasn't playing the game...lol

Do you have this problem a lot and how do you (if you can)resolve it ?

  2. Thanks for asking Helen!

It's a skill that requires MUCH practice and patience! Newborn sessions take longer than other sessions. It's not unheard of to spend 4 hours! But in general, each session should get easier as you gain more experience. Newborns are obviously one of the hardest subjects to work with and photograph, but to me it's worth it.

You'll find that some newborns are very difficult to work with and others are a breeze! Some just want to sleep and cooperate the entire session, and others want to be wriggly and awake and fussy the entire time!

If the baby doesn't want any part of the pose you're doing - move on to the next idea. If the baby isn't wanting to pose AT ALL, then most likely it wants to be held and cuddled. Take advantage of this by taking many different shots with the mother. The possibities are endless!

And last, but not least. Don't rush through your session. Give the mother all the time she needs to feed the baby and make it happy and sleepy. :)
